I believe organisations spend a disproportional amount of time and money on “leadership development” when they first should be considering “management development”.

I'm convinced, based on my experiences across multiple industries, and levels in organisations that until a person can manage well it’s not going to be possible for them to lead.

I'd love to see more emphasis on management development. Rather than this constant pressure to be a leader, or demonstrate leadership, I would welcome a culture where it was ok to say “I'm managing”, “I'm a manager”, “I'm learning to manage”, “I'm a novice manager”, I'm a new manager”.

How about we just demonstrate great “managership” before attempting “leadership”.
