Building team culture

If you have decided that you want to work on building a positive, or high-performance team culture, the first thing you need to do is assess where you are currently at.

Whilst there are a bunch of great team building models out there, from a diagnostic perspective, I can’t go past Bruce Tuckman’s model of Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing.

It’s an easy task to consider where your team might be at:

- Are you a newly formed team that has a tendency towards politeness? (Forming)

- Are you a team that seems to argue a lot, or where conflict seems to be the norm? (Storming)

- Are team members clear on their roles and responsibilities and require a little guidance from time to time? (Norming)

- Does the team function and deliver in a way that appears easy and effortless and is able to continue to get things done whether the manager is present or not? (Performing)

Now it’s a matter of present to desired state. Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How will we get there?
